I’m not involved in an official capacity, but I’m pretty sure that if it’s happening, it’ll be happening at SCALE 23x: SCALE 23x | SCALE.

I posted this in the flox community slack, but figured it made more sense to post here.

I remember there being some Nix workshops in March this year during Planet Nix, but I cannot recall if they had topics or were just open blocks for helping out community members.

Either way-what if we had some sort of session/workshop where we get groups of Nix users, ranging in experience, to tackle open issues, requests for packages, do introductions to flakes (like a build your own flake session for folks who are wanting to move into flakes)?

To build on top of that, maybe it be neat to share flakes like trading cards? I know this sounds out there but I thought of little stations where people could just sit down and show each other flakes, provide feedback, etc. We kind of did this on the fly in the common area, but maybe we could throw some engaging aspects into it…maybe some prizes for community votes on shared flakes?

eg: “Flake Inception: Flake with the most imported flakes/modules”, “Cleanest Flake”, “most unique flake”, “that flake that shouldn’t be”…

I know these are just random ideas thrown around but just wanted to provide some ideas. What do you all think?

PlanetNix 2026 CFP Is Open — Before You Forget Again

Just a small reminder from your future self:

PlanetNix 2026 (co-located with SCALE 23x in Pasadena, CA)
is happening March 5–6… and the CFP is officially open.**

We’re running two days / two tracks / too much Nix (is there such a thing!?) packed with presentations, workshops, lightning talks, and every flavor of Nix magic / cursed computing / deeply questionable build pipelines you can imagine.

We’d love to see your proposals on things like

  • Using Nix at work or at home (bonus points for “it worked on my machine” stories)
  • Reproducible builds, cross-compiling, accidental reproducibility, cursed computing, etc.
  • Nix in CI: Hydra, GitHub/GitLab, build farms, home-grown caches that definitely shouldn’t work but do
  • Developer experience, onboarding, team adoption, and other heroic quests
  • Nix tricks, hacks, spells, rituals, and unstable-channel adventures

Why submit early instead of at 23:59 on the deadline day?
Because:

  • Future-you will forget.
  • Reviewer-you (same person) will thank Present-you.
  • Early submissions get read with fresh eyes instead of caffeine-shaky ones.
  • And let’s be honest: doing it early means more time to break something else later.
  • Karma.

Hit the submit button before the deadline-goblins hit you first.
